Lot 510
KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 18 mm, 8.58 g, 1 h), Sidon, RY 24 of Abdalonymos = 310/9. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a griffin. Rev. AΛEΞANΔΡOY Nike standing front, head to left, with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to lower left, Ω. Price -. Apparently unpublished. Light doubling on the obverse and with a scrape on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

Price did not know any staters with the date Ω, however, he lists a tetradrachm with Ω in the left field and the mintmark of ΣI below the throne of Zeus (Price 3515). The attribution of our coin to Sidon is further proven by obverse die matches to Price 3513 (RY 23 = 311/10 BC, Roma E-Auction 24 (2016), 65) and 3516 (RY 1 of an uncertain king = 309/8 BC, CNG E-Auction 321 (2014), 40). The obverse die apparently remained in use for several years, which indicates a comparably small output of coins
